1 Samuel 7:4 Meaning Then the Children of Israel Removed

Then the children of Israel removed the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and served Yahweh only.

What does 1 Samuel 7:4 mean?

What you demote instead of removing will get consulted again the first time fear shows up. Holding a second option in reserve feels like prudence and operates like a tax.

What you demote instead of removing will get consulted again the first time fear shows up.

Holding a second option in reserve feels like prudence and operates like a tax. The question gets reopened every morning, the reopening keeps a person hedged, a hedged state yields hedged action, and hedged action repeats the same result for a generation.

Ranking a rival lower leaves it standing, and what still stands gets returned to in a bad week; that is a preference wearing a decision's clothes. Removal cuts off any other possibility, and once the retreat is closed, the energy that went into managing options goes into serving Yahweh with everything, which is the part that compounds into deliverance. Keeping one small hedge costs a person divided attention for the rest of their life, and they never find out what their whole strength would have done.

Live 1 Samuel 7:4 today

  1. Pick the one thing you keep half quitting and delete the fallback today, the app off your phone, the number out of your contacts, the tab closed. Keeping it within reach is what makes tomorrow a debate instead of a day.
  2. Tell one person out loud what you have actually decided, not what you are trying. Say it plainly over dinner or in a text, and let the fact that someone heard it close the back door for you.
  3. When the hard hour comes and your mind offers the old option as a reasonable exception, name it as the hedge it is and go do the next ordinary thing instead, dishes, a walk, a phone call.

What am I keeping in reserve, and what would my whole strength do if it had nowhere else to go?

The same truth in other traditions

Bhagavad Gita 2

A mind pulled in many directions has no steadiness, and steadiness is where strength comes from. The seeker who still keeps other ends in reserve never gathers the whole of himself.
