1 Samuel 9:27 Meaning As They Were Going Down

As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us.” He went ahead, then Samuel said, “But stand still first, that I may cause you to hear God’s message.”

What does 1 Samuel 9:27 mean?

The servant walks on ahead, and so does much of a life, busy with errands and motion. Some part of us is always going somewhere.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The servant walks on ahead, and so does much of a life, busy with errands and motion. Some part of us is always going somewhere. That part can be sent forward without harm.

But a deeper word does not arrive while a person is moving. It waits for the stillness. Stand still a while, and the noise of the next task falls away, and only then can what is meant for you be shown. The moment the outer hurry is set down, the inner voice that was always there becomes audible.

Live 1 Samuel 9:27 today

  1. Before you reach for your phone in the morning, sit on the edge of the bed for one full minute and let the day stay unopened. The plans will still be there, and something quieter usually gets a word in first.
  2. When someone you love starts telling you something, put the screen face down and let two seconds of silence sit after they finish. People often say the real thing in that second sentence, the one they only reach if nobody fills the gap.
  3. In a tense meeting or a message thread heating up, let your answer wait half a minute. Keep your hands off the keyboard, breathe once, and see what you actually want to say instead of the first thing that wanted out.

What have you been too busy to hear lately?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 16

Return to stillness, and things become clear on their own. The one who settles can see what the stirred water hides.

Zen

A bell has to stop ringing before you hear the room. The teaching is not added to you, it surfaces when the motion stops.

Hinduism · Katha Upanishad

The voice within is subtle, and only a quieted mind is fine enough to catch it. It speaks the whole time, but not louder than your own rushing.
