1 Timothy 1:5 · World English Bible
but the goal of this command is love, out of a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith,
A spring can only give the water it carries; if the source runs muddy, every stream downhill runs muddy too. All the rules and instruction aim at one clear end, and that end is love, but love that flows from a heart with nothing rotten stored in it.

SUFISM
A spring can only give the water it carries; if the source runs muddy, every stream downhill runs muddy too. All the rules and instruction aim at one clear end, and that end is love, but love that flows from a heart with nothing rotten stored in it. The sickness is mistaking correct behavior for the goal, keeping the letter while the source stays foul.
So a person tends the spring, not the streambed: an honest look at hidden motive, a quiet repentance where no one applauds. In that clearing the One these commands point toward is present, not as a distant lawgiver but as the very love the whole thing was always trying to reach.

If no one ever found out about the good you do, how much of it would you still do?
The Dhammapada opens by saying everything follows from the mind: act from a clear mind and good follows like a shadow. The outward act is downstream of what it came out of.
The Tao Te Ching warns that when the inner thing is lost, people fill the gap with rules and correct manners, and the more rules pile up the thinner the real thing has become. Behavior kept up without the source is a cover story.
Marcus told himself to look at his own motives honestly, because a good deed done to be seen is a different act entirely. He kept the examination private, where there was no one to impress.
