EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

A small self handed a little height too soon climbs straight onto the perch, sure now that it is someone. Pride is the mind inflating around a fresh success, mistaking the swelling for growth. The climb sets up the fall.

What the old word names as the devil is nothing outside the person. The name points to that same swollen self, cut off from the ground of stillness, running the life from ego alone. A young soul handed importance before it has learned to stay quiet inside gets pulled straight into that trap. The fall is no punishment sent from elsewhere. The fall simply happens when a person becomes all surface and forgets the depth beneath the doing.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

Status handed to a man before he has grown into it becomes the exact instrument of his fall. The novice lifted too high mistakes the position for his own magnitude, and pride swells to fill the unearned room. The same inflation ruined the highest angel, who preferred his own brilliance to his place.

Competence and character are supposed to accumulate underneath authority, so the weight has something to rest on. Rush a person to the top and the structure gives way beneath him. He confuses the borrowed altitude for personal greatness and topples into the condemnation that greatness-without-ground always earns. Earn the height by degrees. Skip the climb, and the summit becomes the place you break.

Live 1 Timothy 3:6 today

  1. Next time you catch yourself rehearsing a small win in your head, the compliment, the good numbers, the clever thing you said, let it be enough that it happened. You do not have to build an identity on top of it.
  2. In a group chat or a meeting today, hold back one comment that would mainly show how much you know. Let someone else have the floor and see what you learn from the quiet.
  3. When you get the new title, the praise, the sudden responsibility, keep doing the plain unglamorous parts of the work yourself. Staying close to the ground is what keeps the height from going to your head.

Where am I building my sense of self on something that only happened last week?
