The fastest way out of a private fear is work that someone else is counting on.

Effort held back never produces the one thing that would settle the question, which is movement other people can see. Partial commitment sets the state a person works from, hesitant and self-monitoring, and that state produces hedged action, and hedged action produces nothing that advances, and the absence of advance gets read by the mind as proof that they were never the one for this.

A young leader who fears being dismissed for their age has one reliable exit from that fear, and it runs through people who need what is being built, since attention poured into someone else's progress is attention unavailable for auditing their own. Let the advance stop and the old fear has their attention to itself again.

Live 1 Timothy 4:15 today

  1. Pick the one thing you have been circling and do thirty real minutes of it before you check your phone. Not planning it, not reading about it, the actual work.
  2. Send someone the unfinished thing today. A half-built draft in their inbox beats a perfect one in your drafts folder, and their reply gives you something your own second-guessing never will.
  3. When the voice starts up in a meeting, the one saying you are too young or too new for this room, put your attention on the person who actually needs an answer. Serve them and the voice goes quiet for lack of an audience.

What have I been rehearsing instead of doing, and who is waiting on it?

Bhagavad Gita 3

Work done for its own sake, offered outward rather than held back for self-inspection, is what frees a person. Withholding effort while weighing your own worthiness only tightens the knot.

Zen · Dogen

The practice is the realization, not a prize waiting past it. You do not earn the right to chop wood and then chop it, you chop and the question of whether you may dissolves.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Stop asking whether you are the sort of person who can do the thing, and do it long enough that the question has no footing left. Character shows up in repeated acts, nowhere else.
