1 Timothy 5:6 Meaning But She Who Gives Herself to Pleasure

But she who gives herself to pleasure is dead while she lives.

What does 1 Timothy 5:6 mean?

A person can feel fully alive hour by hour while the only two needs that make a life are going unfed. Every behavior a person repeats is paying them something, and this one pays fast: certainty that the next hour will feel good, variety enough to keep the nerves busy, significance in being the one who can afford it, and company that passes for connection.

Four needs of the personality, served on demand, so nothing protests.

Growth and contribution, the needs of the spirit, get nothing, and those are the two that produce the sensation of being alive. Unfed, the state flattens; a flat state demands a bigger dose to feel anything; the dose eats more of the day, and one action repeated is all that compounds. A woman can be fully occupied and absent from her own life, and what she loses is the capacity to want anything that does not pay out immediately.

Live 1 Timothy 5:6 today

  1. Catch yourself at the first reach for the phone today and let the empty minute stay empty. Dull is not an emergency, it is just a room you have not sat in for a while.
  2. Do one small thing for someone that gives you nothing back, no thanks, no story to tell. Carry the bag, send the useful link, cover the boring task.
  3. Tonight, pick something you are bad at and spend twenty minutes being bad at it. The instrument, the language, the push-ups. It will not feel good, and that is the point.

What in my day pays me instantly, and what in it is actually growing?

Tao Te Ching 12

Too much color blinds the eye, too much flavor dulls the tongue. Chasing sensation makes the senses less able to feel anything at all.

Buddhism · the second noble truth

Craving is not satisfied by feeding it, it is trained by feeding it. Each pleasure grasped at makes the next one necessary rather than enough.

Stoicism · Seneca

Many people are busy all day and alive for none of it. A life spent on what pays out instantly leaves nothing behind that grew.
