1 Timothy 6:16 Meaning He Alone Has Immortality

He alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen, nor can see: to whom be honor and eternal power. Amen.

What does 1 Timothy 6:16 mean?

The thinking mind wants to walk up to what is deepest and inspect it, to see it the way it sees an object across the room. But this cannot be approached that way, because it is not a thing among things.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The thinking mind wants to walk up to what is deepest and inspect it, to see it the way it sees an object across the room. But this cannot be approached that way, because it is not a thing among things. What refuses the approach is the light in which everything appears, the awareness that never dies when the passing forms do.

No eye ever finds it. What looks cannot turn and view its own looking. A person cannot step back far enough to see the seeing itself. Yet this awareness is nearer than any sight, holding the whole life the way light holds a room without becoming one of the objects lit. That closeness is why it endures while everything seen comes and goes.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The undying source dwells in a light the outer man cannot walk into, because the man made of flesh and sense is exactly what must fall away before that light is entered. No eye of the body has seen it or can, for it is not an object placed somewhere to be looked at; it is the seeing itself, the pure awareness behind every glance. To say no man can approach is to say the ego, the person built of appetite and name, dissolves at that threshold and only what is deathless passes through. The honour and power belong to this innermost ground alone, the one thing in a person that was never born and so can never die.

The light at the center of a person cannot be looked at from outside, because it is the very awareness doing the looking, and only when the outer self quiets is it entered.

Light which no man can approach: the innermost awareness at the core of a person, unreachable by the senses because it is the seeing itself, not a thing seen

SUFISM

Sufism

The mind wants to walk right up to the light and own the sight of God, as if understanding could be conquered like a hill. That itch to master the mystery is a subtle vanity. The cure is honest smallness: to admit the eye cannot reach that brightness, and to bow instead of strain.

Yet the same light no one can look at is what lets everything else be seen. A spring cannot be swallowed, but its stream feeds the whole valley. So the Unseen is nearest of all, shining in each thing a person sees, present in the very seeing while staying beyond the stare.

Live 1 Timothy 6:16 today

  1. Sometime today, in line or on the commute, stop looking at what is in front of you and rest for a moment in the fact that you are aware at all. Nothing to find. Just the awareness that is already here.
  2. When someone tells you about their faith or their doubt, resist the urge to settle it into a tidy answer. Let the conversation stay open. Some things get smaller the second we define them.
  3. In a hard meeting or a tense call, remember that you are the space the whole thing is happening in, not just the person with a stake in it. The screen fills up, the room gets loud, and whatever is watching it stays unbothered.

What in me is doing the looking, and has it ever once changed?

The way that can be put into words is not the way itself. Name it and you are holding the name, not the thing.

Hinduism · Upanishads

It is the eye behind the eye, the ear behind the ear. You cannot see what is doing the seeing, because every attempt to look at it is already it, looking.

Sufism · Rumi

You are searching the whole world for what is doing the searching. The light you are hunting is the one you are reading by.
