When obedience was only crisis management, success will feel exactly like permission to stop.

Security dissolves any obedience that was only ever a survival strategy. A king who kept Yahweh's law while the throne shook had linked that law to safety rather than to who he was, so the day the danger ended, the emotion carrying the discipline ended with it and the practice stopped without anyone deciding to stop it.

What a leader obeys for is what his people learn to obey for, which is why a whole nation walks out the same door behind him. The cost is that nothing short of fresh catastrophe brings any of them back, and that catastrophe now has to be large enough to reach a nation.

Live 2 Chronicles 12:1 today

  1. Keep the one small practice today that you only ever keep when things are going badly. The walk, the journal, the early alarm, the quiet half hour.
  2. Ask someone who knows you well what you have let slide since things got easier. Then actually listen to the answer instead of explaining it away.
  3. When a win lands this week, the deal, the good news, the problem that solved itself, do the next ordinary thing on your list within the hour. Let the good day not become a day off from who you are.
