2 Chronicles 20:17 Meaning You Will Not Need to Fight This

You will not need to fight this battle. Set yourselves, stand still, and see the salvation of Yahweh with you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed. Go out against them tomorrow, for Yahweh is with you.’

What does 2 Chronicles 20:17 mean?

You will not win this by fighting, for the struggle itself is the mind resisting what already is. Set yourselves, and stand still.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

You will not win this by fighting, for the struggle itself is the mind resisting what already is. Set yourselves, and stand still. To stand still is not to do nothing. It is to become present, to let go of the frantic inner movement of a self convinced it must control the outcome.

Fear and dismay are only thought reaching forward into an imagined tomorrow. Return to this moment, where the danger you picture does not yet exist, and be still. Out of that stillness a deeper intelligence responds to what is actually here, and it accomplishes what your anxious struggle never could.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Standing still is the last thing a frightened man wants, and the only thing that works against an enemy made of thought. Whatever is fought is fed, because fighter and fought are one energy divided against itself.

Something moves on its own when the doer steps aside. A man who stops wrestling his mind and simply stands, watching the armies of anger and fear come on, sees them lose their force without a blow, because they were living on his participation. The courage asked of Judah was the willingness to do nothing while everything inside screams to act.

  1. When your mind starts rehearsing a conversation you have not had yet, stop and look around the room you are actually in. Nothing you are braced for is happening here.
  2. In an argument at home, stop trying to win the next sentence. Go quiet for a moment and let the other person finish, and see what the silence does that your words could not.
  3. Under a deadline, when the urge is to thrash in every direction at once, close the extra tabs and sit still for thirty seconds. The clear next step usually shows up in the pause, not in the panic.

What are you fighting that has not even happened yet?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The sage does nothing, and nothing is left undone, because the right action comes out of stillness rather than struggle. Forcing the river only makes you wet.

Zen

Sitting quietly, doing nothing, spring comes and the grass grows by itself. Stillness is not idleness, it is letting a deeper order work.

Stoicism · Seneca

We suffer more in imagination than in reality, because fear lives in a tomorrow that has not arrived. Come back to today and most of the battle is already over.
