EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

When the inner war ends, the outer realm grows quiet. The peace did not come because every enemy was defeated by force. It was given, received as rest on every side, the moment struggle was surrendered.

This is how stillness works in a human life. You stop fighting the present moment, you stop resisting what is, and a deep quiet settles through everything you are. The world around you may still turn, but at your center there is rest, because you are no longer at war with this moment.

BUDDHISM

Buddhism

Avera: Freedom from enmity Non-hostility, the condition where no one is anyone's enemy. Quiet on every border means nobody is sharpening anything: the raiding parties out of Moab and Ammon have stopped forming, and the neighboring kings have lost their appetite for the road down into Judah. A house goes quiet when the fighting in it stops, and Judah's quiet is that kind, the noise of hatred simply no longer being made.

Passaddhi: Tranquility The settling of body and mind that comes after gladness. Judah walked out to that valley singing, spent three days carrying off more spoil than they could lift, and what follows is the drop into stillness, the way a room goes quiet once the guests have gone home. Calm of this sort arrives on its own when the shaking stops; no one arranges it.

Yogakkhema: Rest from the yoke Safety in the sense of having the harness taken off. Rest given all around is the ox unhitched at the end of the day, and Jehoshaphat is resting from campaigning rather than between campaigns. Nothing is pulling at his shoulders from any direction, which is the only kind of rest that lets a person put weight down.

Anicca: Impermanence Conditions hold their shape for a while and then change. Rest that is given can be taken back, and this same king will soon tie his fleet to Ahaziah's and stand at Ezion Geber watching the ships break up, the quiet gone with them. Weather like this is worth enjoying while it holds, the way a clear day is, with no promise made about tomorrow.

Appamāda: Heedfulness Attention that stays awake when nothing is pressing on it. The dangerous hour is the still one, when the borders are calm and there is nothing left to pray about, and that is precisely the hour Jehoshaphat gives his son to the house of Ahab. A watchman keeps his post on the nights when nothing happens, and quiet all around is the night to stay standing.

Live 2 Chronicles 20:30 today

  1. Find the one thing today you keep mentally arguing with, the weather, the traffic, your own tiredness, and let it simply be true for five minutes. See how much of the weight was the arguing.
  2. Let someone else be wrong about something small and do not correct them. The quiet you keep is worth more than the point you win.
  3. Stuck in traffic or a slow checkout line, turn off the podcast and just sit there awake. The line moves at the same speed either way, so let your insides stop pushing it.

What would go quiet in you if you stopped fighting this moment?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

Stop struggling and things settle of themselves. The peace is not won, it appears when the fighting stops.

Buddhism

Peace comes not from arranging the world to your liking but from the end of craving and resisting inside you. The still center holds while everything else keeps moving.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You carry your own quiet with you, and you can step into it at any hour. No outer condition has to change first.
