A borrowed conviction is never tested until the person who was holding it in place is gone. Obedience running on another person's approval is powered from outside, and outside power can be withdrawn.

SELF-HELP
A borrowed conviction is never tested until the person who was holding it in place is gone.
Obedience running on another person's approval is powered from outside, and outside power can be withdrawn. While the priest lived, the king had pleasure linked to pleasing him and pain linked to disappointing him, and those two links did the work a conviction should have done. Bury the man holding the lever and the strongest live lever in the room takes over. Bowing princes are a strong lever.
Nothing in the king changed at the funeral; what changed was who was watching. A man who never converts good behaviour into identity finds out later, when the person holding him steady is gone, that he has nothing of his own to stand on, and the people waiting for that moment always know it before he does.
Self-Help lens
If the person who keeps you honest moved away tomorrow, what would quietly slip?
If your steadiness depends on who is in the room, it belongs to them and not to you, and they can take it when they leave.
Knowing others is clever. Knowing yourself is the real clarity, and only that kind holds when no one is watching.
Be your own refuge. A person leaning entirely on another's strength has not yet built any.
