The aim is credited even when the hands are not permitted to finish. David wants to raise the house that would center a whole nation on the highest thing, and he is told he will not be the one to build it. The wanting itself is counted as having done well. What a man sets his heart toward orients him, and the direction is weighed whether or not he lives to see the stones laid.

He prepares what his son will finish. No failure lives in that. A father who cannot reach the summit himself can still turn his life toward it and clear the ground for the one who comes after. To aim at what is worth building, and hand the finishing to another, is not defeat. What a life points at matters more than how far it got.

Live 2 Chronicles 6:8 today

  1. Write down the one good thing you want your life pointed at, even if you will never see it done. Then pick the smallest piece of groundwork for it and do that piece today.
  2. Teach or hand off something to a younger person, a colleague, a kid, a sibling, and let them do it their own way. Help them start what you will not be the one to finish.
  3. When a project gets taken over, reassigned, or credited to someone else, hold onto what you actually built. Your aim was good whether or not your name stays attached to it.

What am I willing to start knowing someone else will be the one to finish it?

The same truth in other traditions

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

It is not yours to finish the work, but you are not free to walk away from it either. The labor counts even when the completion belongs to someone else.

Bhagavad Gita 2

Do what is right and release your grip on the outcome. The worth of the act lives in its direction, not in whether you are there for the harvest.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 17

The best work is done so that others say they did it themselves. What matters is that the thing got built, not that your name is on it.
