2 Corinthians 12:11 Meaning I Have Become Foolish in Boasting

I have become foolish in boasting. You compelled me, for I ought to have been commended by you, for I am in no way inferior to the very best apostles, though I am nothing.

What does 2 Corinthians 12:11 mean?

A man who genuinely knows he is nothing can boast without danger, because there is nobody home to be inflated by it. The boasting is theater, done because the crowd demanded credentials, and he says so while doing it.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

A man who genuinely knows he is nothing can boast without danger, because there is nobody home to be inflated by it. The boasting is theater, done because the crowd demanded credentials, and he says so while doing it. That transparency is the difference between ego and the absence of it.

Being nothing is not humility, which is only pride standing on its head, arranging to be admired for refusing admiration. It is the plain fact discovered when the false center dissolves and comparison loses its ground. From there, claiming equality with the greatest and claiming nothing at all are the same statement, and neither one costs him anything.

  2. The next time someone praises you, take it simply and say thank you, with no deflection and no little story about how it was nothing. Refusing praise is its own kind of showing off.
  3. When you have to state your case, a salary conversation, a review, a pitch, say what you are good at plainly and without inflating or shrinking it. Facts are easy to say when you are not trying to be somebody.

Who are you when nobody is ranking you, including you?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The one who makes no claims cannot be diminished, and so stands ahead without ever competing. There is nothing there for a rival to take.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

When the self is empty, praise and insult pass through like wind through an open window. Neither one finds anybody home to land on.

Buddhism · anatta

Look carefully for the solid self at the center of you and no such thing is found, only passing states. When that lands, comparing yourself to anyone loses its footing.
