2 Corinthians 13:11 Meaning Finally

Finally, brothers, rejoice! Be perfected. Be comforted. Be of the same mind. Live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.

What does 2 Corinthians 13:11 mean?

To be perfect does not mean to become flawless by effort, which only feeds the ego's endless sense of not being enough. It means to be whole, complete in this moment as you already are beneath your ideas about yourself.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To be perfect does not mean to become flawless by effort, which only feeds the ego's endless sense of not being enough. It means to be whole, complete in this moment as you already are beneath your ideas about yourself. From that wholeness comes comfort, and a natural end to the inner war.

To be of one mind is to recognize the single awareness looking out through every person, beneath the surface of separate opinions. When you live from that recognition, conflict loses its fuel and peace becomes your ground. Love and peace are not rewards that arrive later for good behavior. They are what is already present the moment you stop resisting this moment and grow still.

BUDDHISM

Buddhism

Muditā: Joy at another's good fortune "Finally, brothers, rejoice" lands on a house that had spent a long season keeping score of one another. Muditā is gladness at someone else's good fortune. Hearing a rival's good news and feeling it as your own leaves envy nothing left to burn.

Sikkhā: Training "Be perfected" runs closer to be mended, the word for knotting a torn fishing net back into one piece. Sikkhā is the step by step training in conduct, mind, and understanding. Nobody hands a torn community wholeness in an afternoon; the knots go in one at a time, and the ones already tied hold while the next is worked.

Passaddhi: Tranquility "Be comforted" comes at the end of a hard letter, from a man who has just warned he would not spare them. Passaddhi is the settling of an agitated body and mind. Shoulders that have been up around the ears for weeks come down, and the mind stops rehearsing its defense.

Sāmaggī: Concord Sāmaggī is the harmony of a community that has stopped dividing into parties. Being "of the same mind" leaves plenty of room for different opinions; it asks that people look at one another with kindly eyes and mix like milk and water. Corinth had grown factions around favorite teachers, and concord is what closes those seams.

Santi: Peace Santi is stillness, the quiet of a pot taken off the boil. "Live in peace" describes somewhere to stand rather than a mood that visits on good days. The quarrel goes unrestarted at the next gathering, and the small provocations that used to catch fire pass through.

Mettā: Loving-kindness Love and peace stand side by side in that closing promise, and the order holds. Mettā is the wish that beings be well, offered without conditions. Warmth given the way a mother guards her only child stops sorting people into the deserving and the undeserving, and peace walks in behind it.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Rejoicing cannot be manufactured by effort; it is what remains when the mind stops its commentary about what should have been and what may come. Being perfected is not improvement, adding one virtue after another to the same old personality, but wholeness, the divided fragments falling into one piece.

Being of the same mind with another happens only when the ego, that false center which must defend its position, is no longer standing in between. Two borrowed opinions can only quarrel. Peace then is nobody's achievement; it is the natural climate of awareness, and love the fragrance rising from it.

Live 2 Corinthians 13:11 today

  1. Before you pick up your phone this morning, sit still for one minute and let yourself be fine exactly as you are, unimproved, nothing fixed yet.
  2. In your next conversation, look past the opinion the person is holding and remember the same aliveness is awake in them as in you. Let that soften how you answer.
  3. When a group chat or email thread turns into sides, pause before you type. Ask yourself whether you want to be right or whether you want the peace, and answer from the quieter one.

What would change today if you stopped trying to be enough and let yourself already be?

Tao Te Ching

The sage does not strive to improve on what is already whole. Wanting to add to the world's completeness is what breaks it.

Zen

You are already what you are trying to become. The search itself is the only thing standing in the way.

Advaita Vedanta

The one awareness looks out through every pair of eyes. Seeing that, you cannot quite stay at war with anyone.
