2 Corinthians 13:5 Meaning Examine Your Own Selves

Examine your own selves, whether you are in the faith. Test your own selves. Or don’t you know about your own selves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.

What does 2 Corinthians 13:5 mean?

The power to shape a life is not stationed somewhere overhead. It sits inside a person's own imagination, in the pictures he entertains and the feelings he accepts as his own.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The power to shape a life is not stationed somewhere overhead. It sits inside a person's own imagination, in the pictures he entertains and the feelings he accepts as his own. Paul turns the searchlight around. Rather than study the world for proof, a man studies the state he is living from, because that inward state is the savior doing the saving.

The test lies in what a person assumes about himself when no one is watching, in the loose moments before sleep. Those quiet assumptions are his faith, and they are already at work in his affairs. Nothing outside is handing him his circumstances. The Christ in him is his own human imagining, and it answers to whatever he keeps believing about who he is.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The whole search turns inward here: the higher awareness is found by examining the self, not by looking to any figure outside. Christ in you is stated plainly as the indwelling higher consciousness seated within every person, the light that religion projects onto a distant man in history but that actually lives inside. To prove your own self is to test whether that inner presence is awake and active. The reprobate is the one in whom it stays dormant, unrecognized and unproven, the person who never turned to find what was already there. Faith here means the direct awareness that the divine stands within one's own body. The kingdom that outward religion keeps promising elsewhere is confirmed, in the clearest words, to be already inside the one who looks.

Jesus Christ in you: the higher consciousness, the anointed awareness seated within a person's own body, the light mistaken for a distant historical figure. Your own selves: the inner ground where the divine actually dwells, the one true place to look and test for its presence.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

The instruction is to turn around and look inward, to test what a person is actually made of instead of what they claim to be. This is harder than it sounds, because most self-examination stops at the surface, at the face we show the world.

Go deeper and something waits at the bottom. There is a center in the soul larger than the small self, a source of wholeness that has been there all along. It cannot be found by looking outward or by taking someone else's word for it. Only honest, patient searching within uncovers the thing that was inside the whole time.

SUFISM

Sufism

It is easy to keep watch on everyone else and never once check the state of one's own heart. That outward glance is often pride wearing a disguise, a way to feel above the crowd. The honest move is to sit alone and ask whether love actually lives here or only its costume.

And the search ends closer than expected. The one being sought is not far off in the sky but already dwelling within the seeker, the way light already fills a room the moment the shutters open.

Live 2 Corinthians 13:5 today

  1. Before sleep tonight, catch the quiet sentence you are telling yourself about your life, the one that runs under everything. Trade it for the sentence you would say if the thing you want were already settled, and fall asleep in that one.
  2. In your next conversation, listen for how you describe yourself when it slips out casually, the half joke about being bad at money or always behind. Say the truer version out loud instead, even if it feels early.
  3. When something goes wrong at work and you start scanning for who to blame or what the world is doing to you, turn the search around. Ask what you had already assumed about how this would go.

What have I been quietly assuming about myself, and would I want it to come true?

Upanishads

The self you are hunting for is not out beyond the stars. It is the one sitting in the cave of your own heart, and knowing it is the whole of the search.

Stop looking for the sacred somewhere else. The one asking the question, right now, is the thing being asked about.

Look within. The spring of good is inside you, and it will keep flowing if you keep digging there instead of out in the world.
