2 Corinthians 2:16 Meaning To the One a Stench From Death

to the one a stench from death to death, to the other a sweet aroma from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things?

What does 2 Corinthians 2:16 mean?

The same truth reaches two people and produces opposite reactions. To one it carries the smell of death, to the other the smell of life.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The same truth reaches two people and produces opposite reactions. To one it carries the smell of death, to the other the smell of life. Why? Because to the ego, living in its own thoughts and defenses, the invitation to be present feels like dying. And in a way it is, for the false self must dissolve.

To the one who is ready, that same invitation smells of life, because beyond the ego's death lies the aliveness of simply being. Nothing about the truth itself changes. What differs is whether a person clings to who they think they are or lets it go. That is why the same truth brings death to one and life to another.

Live 2 Corinthians 2:16 today

  1. Sometime today you will read or hear something true about yourself that stings. Before you argue with it, sit still for a breath and see if the sting is coming from the truth or from the part of you that wants to stay unchanged.
  2. When someone tells you something honest and your chest tightens, say nothing for three seconds. Let the discomfort be there without defending. You can always answer after, but answer from the quiet, not from the tightness.
  3. In a meeting or a hard conversation where your work or your judgment gets questioned, feel what wants to rise up and protect you. That protective rush is not you. Stay in your seat, breathe, and listen to the rest of the sentence.

What part of me would have to quietly die for today to feel like life?

Tao Te Ching

The way looks like a loss to the one who wants to gain. What the ordinary mind calls emptiness and death, the one who has let go calls the only real fullness.

Zen

A student once asked how to be free, and the teacher said the gate is wide open, you are the one holding yourself outside it. Nothing in the gate changes. Only your grip does.

Stoicism · Epictetus

What disturbs people is not the thing itself but the view they take of it. Two people face the same hour and one calls it ruin, the other calls it release.
