2 Corinthians 4:9 · World English Bible
pursued, yet not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed;
When the world turns against you, something in you feels abandoned. But that feeling belongs to the person you take yourself to be, the fragile identity built from thought and circumstance.

EGO & BEING
When the world turns against you, something in you feels abandoned. But that feeling belongs to the person you take yourself to be, the fragile identity built from thought and circumstance. Beneath it lives a stiller presence that no attack can reach, because it was never made of the things that can be broken.
So you can be struck down and yet not destroyed. The situation collapses, the mind cries out, and still you are here, because what you most deeply are is the awareness in which all of this happens, and awareness itself cannot be wounded.

CYBERNETICS
A man can be knocked flat and still not be finished, and the gap between the two holds his whole strength. Being cast down belongs to circumstance. Being destroyed is a verdict, and the verdict is issued inside, by the picture a person holds of who he is.
The one who feels forsaken but is not forsaken has kept some thread of connection to his own worth that no attacker can cut. Knocked down, he still knows the ground is temporary. That inner certainty, not the absence of blows, is what lets a person rise after being cast down.
Ego v. Being lens
What in me got bruised today, and what in me watched it happen without flinching?
Weapons cannot cut it, fire cannot burn it, water cannot wet it. What you truly are is not among the things that can be damaged.
Things outside you cannot touch the soul. The disturbance comes from your own judgment about them, and that is yours to set down.
Waves rise and crash and vanish all day. The water itself is not troubled by any of it.
