Sīla: Moral conduct Sīla is the training that keeps action and speech clean. Pureness heads the list because credentials here are carried in the body: what the hands have done, what the mouth has said, all of it set against the beatings and prisons just recounted. Like a lamp with clean glass, conduct that hides nothing lets the light through without anyone needing to argue for it.

Paññā: Wisdom Paññā is the seeing that knows what helps and what harms. Knowledge stands between clean living and patience because warm intentions alone will blunder, and the kind word at the wrong moment cuts. A traveler who knows the road can walk it in the dark, which matters for a man writing to people already charmed by smoother preachers.

Khanti: Patient endurance Khanti is the strength to bear hardship and provocation without hitting back. Perseverance arrives right after the stripes, the imprisonments, the sleepless nights, so it means the patience of someone still on their feet after the blow rather than the composure of someone left alone. Water wears down stone by staying with it, and the staying is the whole quality.

Mettā: Loving-kindness Mettā is goodwill extended to beings without sorting them first. Kindness offered as a credential means warmth held toward the very congregation that has been questioning him, and toward the hands that did the striking. A mother's care for her child is the old image for it, and that care never waits for the child to earn it.

Sacca: Truthfulness Sacca is the match between word and fact, face and heart. Love called sincere is love with the mask off, weighed against the hired affection of teachers who flatter for a fee. A coin either rings true when dropped or it does not, and people can hear the difference long before they can explain it.

Pāramī: Perfections The pāramī are qualities ripened slowly across a life. Purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, and truthfulness are five of the ten by the traditional count, gathered here in a single breath, which is how they work: strands twisted into one rope, each taking the strain when another slackens. The Holy Spirit named among them has no counterpart term, and the difference is worth keeping in view, since Paul draws these virtues from a source outside himself while the pāramī are grown from within.

Live 2 Corinthians 6:6 today

  1. Reread one message before you send it and take out the part written to look good. What is left is usually shorter and truer.
  2. With the person who has been hardest on you lately, do one small kind thing they have not earned, a real question, a cup of coffee, an honest compliment. No waiting for them to come around first.
  3. When you know the kind thing to say but the timing is wrong, hold it. Warmth without good judgment lands like a cut, so wait for the moment when it can actually be received.

Which of my good qualities is for other people, and which would survive a week alone?

The same truth in other traditions

Analects · Confucius

Fine words and a studied expression are rarely paired with real goodness. What counts is whether the inside and the outside match.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Be upright rather than kept upright by others. Patience, honesty, and warmth are not a performance for an audience, they are what you are when nobody is checking.

Yoga Sutras

Non-harming and truthfulness come before every advanced practice. The whole structure rests on clean conduct, and nothing built above it stands without it.
