Rizq: Provision Rizq names the portion that reaches a person. When someone works hard for what they have, it all starts to feel self-made, so handing any of it over feels like tearing off a piece. Counting the whole supply as something delivered changes that feeling, since passing along what arrived from elsewhere takes nothing from the giver.

Tawakkul: Trust in God's care Tawakkul is the settled trust that the care keeps coming. A hand closes when someone is quietly doing math about running out, and that worry is rarely about today; it usually reaches years ahead. Once a person settles into being looked after, the math stops and the hand opens without being forced.

Charity falls into God's hand before it reaches the one who asks: giving goes upward first The Prophet described the direction a gift travels. Helping someone can quietly turn into a debt, with the giver waiting for gratitude and the person helped feeling small. If the gift goes up before it goes across, the giver has already been answered, and nobody is left owing anything.

Takhalluq: Taking on God's own qualities Sufis use this word for picking up a trace of God's character, generosity among them. Anyone known for giving gets praised, and praise sticks; the open hand begins to feel like a personal achievement. Treating that openness as borrowed keeps the thanks moving past the giver to the one who supplied both the money and the urge to hand it over.

Shukr: Gratitude Al-Ghazali describes thankfulness as using a gift the way its giver meant it to be used. Money sitting in a drawer says nothing back to whoever sent it. Given to someone who needed it, that same money starts a chain of thanks that runs back past the giver to God.

If you give thanks, I will give you more: gratitude keeps the supply moving A promise in the Quran runs along these lines. Gratitude and grabbing pull in opposite directions, since a person counting what is missing holds tighter, while a person counting what arrived loosens up. Thanks keeps someone open, and open people keep having things arrive that are worth being thankful for.

Live 2 Corinthians 9:11 today

  1. Before you eat tonight, name one thing that came to you this week that you did not arrange. Say it out loud if anyone is around, quietly if not.
  2. When you help someone, say nothing about it afterward and do not wait for thanks. The gift already went somewhere before it reached them, and you are not owed.
  3. On your commute, instead of counting what is missing from your life, count three things that actually arrived. The hand opens on its own when the math changes direction.

Do I keep a running count of what is missing, or of what arrived?

Tao Te Ching

The sage does the work and takes no credit for it, since claiming the result as personal achievement is exactly what spoils it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

What you have was lent, not earned outright, so give thanks for the loan and use it as the lender intended rather than calling it your own.

Judaism

The blessing said before you use a thing is the admission that it came from outside you. Gratitude spoken first keeps the supply from feeling self-made.
