2 John 1:2 Meaning For the Truth’s Sake

for the truth’s sake, which remains in us, and it will be with us forever:

What does 2 John 1:2 mean?

Truth is not a set of ideas you acquire or a belief you defend. Opinions come and go, concepts shift, but the truth that matters is not out there to be argued over.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Truth is not a set of ideas you acquire or a belief you defend. Opinions come and go, concepts shift, but the truth that matters is not out there to be argued over. It dwells within you, closer than your thoughts, as the silent awareness alive in you at this very moment.

Because it is not made of form or time, it does not age or fade. This is why it stays with you forever: what lives in you as presence was never born and cannot die, and you return to it in any moment simply by becoming still and aware.

Live 2 John 1:2 today

  1. Sometime today, put the phone face down and sit for two minutes without trying to figure anything out. What is still there when the thinking stops is the part of you that never changes.
  2. In a conversation where you disagree, try holding your view loosely instead of defending it. See if you can stay warm toward the person while your opinion sits there unguarded.
  3. When the day gets loud, stuck in traffic, a meeting running long, come back to the plain fact that you are here and aware. That awareness is not disturbed by any of it.

If the truest thing about you is already here, what are you still looking for?

The same truth in other traditions

Upanishads

What you are looking for is not far away. It is the awareness sitting behind your eyes right now, unchanged since before you had a name.

Zen

Don't go looking for water while you are standing in the river. The truth is not an idea to collect, it is what is already looking.
