2 John 1:5 Meaning Now I Beg You
Now I beg you, dear lady, not as though I wrote to you a new commandment, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

Now I beg you, dear lady, not as though I wrote to you a new commandment, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
Sanantana dhamma: The ancient law An old truth, standing long before anyone wrote it down. Hatred has always been quieted by love and never by more hatred, so asking a household to love again is like sweeping a path that was cleared generations back and simply grew over.

BUDDHISM
Sanantana dhamma: The ancient law An old truth, standing long before anyone wrote it down. Hatred has always been quieted by love and never by more hatred, so asking a household to love again is like sweeping a path that was cleared generations back and simply grew over. Something held from the beginning does not need defending; it needs walking.
Sikkhāpada: Training rule A line of training a person takes up. "Commandment" arrives sounding like an order from a height, yet it comes as a plea to a beloved household, which puts it nearer to a promise made than a demand obeyed. Love one another then becomes something practiced daily, the way scales are practiced, until the hand goes there without being told.
Mettā: Loving-kindness Warm goodwill toward others. To love one another is to want good for the person across the room, whether or not they are easy that day, the way a mother wants her child well even when the child is difficult. Feeling need not come first; the wish can be made on purpose, and warmth follows the wish more often than it leads.
Sāraṇīyā dhammā: The qualities that keep a household whole Six habits that hold a group together: kindness in what you do, say, and think toward those beside you, sharing what comes to you, keeping the same standards, holding the same understanding. "One another" carries the weight of the request, since this love has to survive shared meals, shared money, and disagreement under one roof. Handing over the last of the bread is where an ancient law becomes visible.
Kalyāṇamittatā: Good friendship Companionship with people who steady your practice, called the whole of the holy life. A letter like this one is that friendship working across a distance, keeping a household pointed the right way when the writer cannot come in person. Loving one another and keeping one another on the path turn out to be a single act, the way two people walking home together keep each other from wandering off.
Buddhism lens
Who is close enough to me that loving them has to survive the laundry and the money and the disagreements?
Asked for the whole Torah while standing on one foot, Hillel said: what is hateful to you, do not do to another. The rest is commentary, go and learn it.
My heart has become able to take every form, he wrote, and love is the faith I hold. The old law was never a new idea, only a long neglected one.
We were made for each other the way the top and bottom teeth are made for each other. Working together is not a lofty goal, it is the design.
