2 Kings 13:23 Meaning But Yahweh Was Gracious to Them

But Yahweh was gracious to them, and had compassion on them, and had respect for them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, and he didn’t cast them from his presence as yet.

What does 2 Kings 13:23 mean?

The grace that reaches you does not depend on how well you have performed, on whether you have earned it by getting your life right. It flows from something older and deeper than your successes and your failures, a source that was giving before you were born and will go on giving.

Ego v. Being

The grace that reaches you does not depend on how well you have performed, on whether you have earned it by getting your life right. It flows from something older and deeper than your successes and your failures, a source that was giving before you were born and will go on giving.

You may feel you have drifted far, that you are hardly worthy of being held. Yet the deeper life within you was never withdrawn. You are not kept safe by your own merit but by that ancient ground of being, and it does not cast you out, because what holds you does not measure whether you deserve it.

Live 2 Kings 13:23 today

  1. Think of one thing you have been quietly beating yourself up about and set it down for the length of one walk today. You are not held up by your own good record.
  2. Be kind to one person today who has not earned it from you lately. Give it anyway, and see what it loosens in you.
  3. When you fall short at work and the critical voice starts up, let it talk without agreeing with it. Your worth is not up for review in that moment.

What are you assuming you have to deserve before you can be held?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The Tao gives without keeping score and never asks whether you earned it. It holds what fails as readily as what succeeds.

Buddhism · Metta

Kindness is offered to all beings, not to the deserving ones. Your own worst days are included, not excepted.

Judaism

Mercy rests on an old promise, not on your performance this week. You are held by something that long predates you.
