What you want to be true will do your interpreting for you, and then you will bet everything on the result.

Appetite does the interpreting whenever the evidence is ambiguous. Red water at sunrise could carry a dozen meanings, and the one selected was the one already wanted, because a hoped-for reading arrives feeling like sight rather than like a guess.

A guess does not move an army. The picture has to be vivid enough to pass for fact, and then it sets the state, and the state sends men downhill after plunder, and the charge puts them inside a trap assembled out of their own hope. Speed against a wrong map is what finishes them, and the only defense was one question nobody was in any condition to ask.

  1. When you read a text or an email today and your stomach drops or your chest lifts, write down two other things it could mean before you reply.
  2. When a group chat decides what someone meant and everyone agrees fast, be the one who asks the plain question instead of adding to the pile.
  3. Under real pressure, before you commit money, time or a decision, say out loud what you are hoping is true. Then ask what you would need to see to know it actually is.

What are you so hoping is true that you have stopped checking?

Craving colors perception, so a mind that wants something sees that thing where it is not. The suffering comes less from the world than from the picture appetite painted over it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He taught that when an impression arrives you should stop and say, wait, let me test you. The untested impression is the one that walks a person off a cliff.

Tao Te Ching 71

To know that you do not know is the beginning of wisdom. The sickness is believing you already see.
