Ego v. Being

There is a quality in certain people that the noise of the mind cannot manufacture and cannot fully hide from you either. When a woman noticed the man who kept passing her door, what she recognized was not his role or his reputation. She sensed a stillness in him, a presence that was awake, and something in her grew quiet enough to perceive it.

You know this recognition. It is the deep in one person answering the deep in another, beneath all the talking. She called him holy because he was fully here, again and again, and being truly present is itself the holiness we keep looking for elsewhere.

Live 2 Kings 4:9 today

  1. Think of someone whose presence calms you, not their advice, just how they are. Let yourself want that quality rather than wanting to impress anyone today.
  2. In one conversation, stop preparing your reply and just be with the person. People feel the difference immediately, even if neither of you names it.
  3. When you are rushed and short with people, the cashier, your family at dinner, slow down for ten seconds and actually be there with the person in front of you. That small turn is most of what anyone means by holiness.

Who has been passing by your door, fully present, while you were too busy to feel it?
