Aren’t Abanah and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them, and be clean?” So he turned and went away in a rage.

A fixed picture of how rescue must arrive will cost a man the rescue, and he will feel justified the whole way.

Anger at the size of an instruction is a belief defending itself. A conviction about how healing must arrive, with ceremony and a hand waved over the spot, was assumed rather than checked, and the assumption did the deciding. Violated pictures produce insult, insult sets the state, the state sets the turn, and the turn puts distance between a man and the water that works.

The comparison is accurate and beside the point, since the river was never recommended for its clarity. Away from humiliation and toward standing: those were the levers, and they moved him past his own healing at speed. A preference about method nearly cost him his body, and it would have taken it quietly, with his dignity intact.

Live 2 Kings 5:12 today

  1. Find the one place in your life where you keep saying the real answer is something else, a different job, a different doctor, a different city, and try today's smaller option for one honest week instead. You can go back to being right later.
  2. When somebody suggests a fix that feels too plain for your situation, ask them one question about it before you explain why it will not work. Most of us argue first and understand second, and the order costs us.
  3. If you walk away from something in a flash of being disrespected, give yourself an hour before you make it final. Anger makes a very convincing case and it is almost never arguing for what you actually want.

What am I refusing because it is too small, while calling the refusal self respect?

The stiff and rigid breaks, the soft and yielding survives. A fixed idea about how things must go is the hardest thing a person carries.
