2 Kings 5:3 Meaning She Said to Her Mistress

She said to her mistress, “I wish that my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! Then he would heal him of his leprosy.”

What does 2 Kings 5:3 mean?

The person with the least power in the room changes everything by spending their attention on somebody else's problem. Powerlessness removes almost everything and never touches the one thing that decides a life, which is where a person aims their attention.

The person with the least power in the room changes everything by spending their attention on somebody else's problem.

Powerlessness removes almost everything and never touches the one thing that decides a life, which is where a person aims their attention. A girl taken in a raid had a complete inventory to rehearse and every right to rehearse it, and the rehearsal would have produced a matching state and nothing more.

Spending that attention on her master's disease instead put one sentence into the air that carried a general to a prophet's door and down into a river. Contribution has never scaled with a person's circumstances; it scales with what they are looking at. A captive who holds the grievance keeps her captivity, and the house she serves keeps its leper.

  1. Next time you catch yourself running the list of what was taken from you, let it finish once, then ask who in your day actually has a problem you could help with. Send that person a message before you put the phone down.
  2. In a conversation with someone who has more power than you, a boss, a landlord, a doctor, say the one useful thing you know even if it is not your place to say it. One sentence from the quiet person in the room has changed more than a dozen speeches from the loud one.
  3. When you feel small in a group chat or a meeting, resist the pull to score a point about your own treatment and ask instead what the group is stuck on. Being overlooked and being useless are two different things, and only one of them is up to you.

Who around me has a problem I could speak into, if I stopped waiting to be given standing first?
