EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The young servant looked out at dawn and saw the hills packed with enemy horses and chariots, and his heart dropped. His master answered without a tremor. Those with us are more than those with them. The frightened mind counts only what the eyes can weigh, and its arithmetic always ends in dread.

A deeper seeing waits beneath that fear, and it does not depend on numbers. It rests in a presence larger than any circling army, and from that place the odds look entirely different. Fear shrinks the world to what threatens it. When a person grows still enough to sense the vast life holding them, the surrounding danger stops being the whole picture, and the panic loosens its grip.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

What you count when the odds look bad is already a belief, and the count sets your emotion before anything happens.

Everyone under threat is running a tally, and the number they land on does the work that circumstance usually gets blamed for. A total assembled only from what the eyes can reach is still a claim about a future nobody can check, and it sets the state, and the state decides whether the morning is spent looking for an exit.

Two men on that hill were equally certain about a count neither could verify, and the one who included God's side of the arithmetic got the calm morning. A person who counts only the visible ends up with a life the exact size of their eyesight, making every decision from a total they were never going to finish.

  1. When you wake up and your mind starts counting what is against you, bills, deadlines, the thing you are dreading, put your feet on the floor and breathe for thirty seconds first. Let something steadier than the count come online.
  2. If someone close to you is spiraling today, don't argue with their numbers. Just be calm beside them, because calm is contagious in a way reassurance is not.
  3. In the middle of a hard meeting or a tense message, pause before reacting and feel the chair, the floor, your breath. The pressure is real, but it is not everything that is here.

What have you been counting lately that fear told you was the whole story?

Tao Te Ching

The soft and quiet outlasts the hard and loud. What looks overwhelming is not as solid as fear reports.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Fear comes from your estimate of the thing, not the thing. Look again, calmly, and the arithmetic changes.

Bhagavad Gita

What you truly are cannot be cut or burned or drowned. Remember that, and the army on the hill is no longer the whole picture.
