2 Peter 1:19 Meaning We Have the More Sure Word

We have the more sure word of prophecy; and you do well that you heed it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns, and the morning star arises in your hearts:

What does 2 Peter 1:19 mean?

Something steadier than thought lives underneath the noise of a person's days, and it does not flicker the way opinions and moods do. It burns quietly, like a small flame in a dark room, and when attention rests on it the darkness loses its hold.

Ego v. Being

Something steadier than thought lives underneath the noise of a person's days, and it does not flicker the way opinions and moods do. It burns quietly, like a small flame in a dark room, and when attention rests on it the darkness loses its hold. The mind cannot manufacture this steadiness. It can only be turned toward and trusted.

Heeding that light is not straining to understand it. A person simply lets it shine, and by staying near it the inner room grows less dim. Then the promise begins to keep itself. The dawn does not arrive from somewhere far off. The day star rises within, and the one who waited discovers the light was already theirs, waking now in the heart.

Live 2 Peter 1:19 today

  1. Find one plain minute today, kettle boiling, car parked, elevator moving, and instead of filling it, stay near the quiet underneath. You are not trying to figure anything out, just staying close to it.
  2. With someone you trust, let a pause last longer than is comfortable. Do not rush to fill it with a story or a joke, and see what rises when neither of you is performing.
  3. When the day gets loud and your thoughts are flickering between twenty things, stop and put your attention on one steady thing: your breath, your feet, the weight of your hands. Stay there until the room feels less dim.

What steady thing is already lit in me that I keep walking past in the noise?

Tao Te Ching 16

Return to stillness and you return to the root. The one who settles there sees clearly, while the restless keep stirring up the water they are trying to look through.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita

The lamp in a windless place does not flicker. A mind that has stopped being blown around rests in its own steady light.

Zen

You do not make the moon shine by thinking hard about it. You only stop raising dust, and the reflection appears on still water.
