SUFISM
ʿIlm ladunnī: Knowledge given straight from God al-Ghazali's name for understanding that arrives without being worked out. A person can usually trace how they learned something: the book, the argument, the slow figuring. Now and then something lands whole, with no such trail behind it. The one who receives it knows they did not think it up, and that keeps them from signing their name to it.
Khawāṭir: The thoughts that arrive in the heart on their own al-Ghazali sorted these arrivals by where they come from. A person's own wish can dress up in holy language and pass itself off as a message, and people fool themselves this way constantly. Someone who watches the traffic in their own heart long enough learns the difference, mostly by recognizing what they would never have wanted or chosen to say.
Fanāʾ: The passing away of the self Junayd's word for the self dropping out of the picture. While a person is still weighing how they sound, what this will win them, whether they come off wise, their own hand is in every sentence. The ones trusted to carry something have had that worry worn down, so nothing gets bent to fit their advantage. Their words come through unbent because they had nothing to gain by them.
Jadhba: Being pulled by God The tradition's word for being drawn along rather than doing the walking. A person can prepare for years and still find the moment arrives on its own, moving them before they have agreed to it. Sufis describe it as being carried, the way a swimmer is carried once the current has them, with their own effort suddenly small.
I become the tongue with which he speaks: the words are handed over, not composed A saying the Prophet passed on from God, about the servant who keeps drawing near. Such a person keeps their own voice, vocabulary, and accent, and still does not own what comes out of them. Listeners can usually feel the difference: the speaker seems to be handing something over instead of making a case for themselves.

How much of what I said today was shaped by what I wanted back from it?
Lao Tzu said the sage does not display himself and so is seen clearly. Once a person stops arranging how they come across, what passes through them arrives unbent.
In the Genjokoan he wrote that to study the self is to forget the self, and that awakening comes when the ten thousand things advance and confirm you rather than you reaching for them.
Krishna tells Arjuna to act without an eye on what the act will win him. The moment the gain is being measured, the doing is already bent toward the one doing it.
