SUFISM
Maqāmāt: Stations Sufis name the steps of the road stations, each one resting on the one below. A list of qualities taken in as a single lump feels like a test you pass or fail all at once. As stations, the same list becomes plain order: the devotion a person holds steady is what opens room in them for warmth toward others.
Ḥusn al-khuluq: Beautiful character Sufis call it beautiful character when devotion shows in how a person treats the people around them. Someone can be careful about prayer and still be short and cold at home, and the two can sit side by side for years. The Prophet said he came to complete good character, which moves the measure of devotion somewhere ordinary: whether a person is kind to be around.
Ukhuwwa: Brotherhood Brotherhood names the tie between people traveling the same road, and al-Ghazali gave it a whole book of duties. Fondness for fellow travelers is easy to picture and hard to hold, since the people closest to shared work are often the ones who irritate you most. The duties he lists stay small and concrete: covering a friend's fault, keeping what they told you, asking about their trouble before they bring it up.
None of you believes until you want for your brother what you want for yourself: the measure of affection The Prophet placed faith itself on that one line. Most people can wish a friend well in general and still feel a small drop when that friend gets the very thing they were hoping for. The drop shows where the affection stands, and the measure offered here is simple: another person's good news landing in you like your own.
Maḥabba: Love Al-Ghazali put love at the top of the stations, with everything below leading to it and everything after growing from it. A person can climb carefully and still end up dutiful and dry, doing the right things with little wanting behind them. Love is where the wanting carries the doing, and warmth for the people God made arrives with it instead of being worked up.

Whose good news lands in me like my own, and whose does not?
He put ren, warmth toward people, at the center of everything, and said a person polished in manner but cold at home has missed the point. The test of your cultivation is whether you are good to be around.
The teaching asks a person to wish for every being the safety and ease they would want for themselves, starting with the ones nearest and hardest. The wish is trained, not waited for.
Asked for the whole of the law standing on one foot, Hillel said: do not do to your neighbor what you would hate done to you. Everything else, he said, is the commentary.
