BUDDHISM
Micchādiṭṭhi: Wrong view Wrong view is a mistaken read of how things work, and here it is sold rather than merely held. Freedom offered by a man whose appetites give the orders is the blind leading the blind: he can point confidently down a road he has never walked. Those just out of the old life listen hardest, because they still count freedom by the rules they have dropped instead of by how little pulls at them.
Taṇhā: Craving Craving is thirst, the reach toward what pleases and the shove against what does not. Whoever overcomes a man does own him, and the conqueror is rarely a person: it is the bottle, the appetite, the next thing wanted. A man can walk out of every prison in the country and still carry his thirst with him, and by evening it is telling him where to go.
Saṃyojana: Fetters Fetters are the bonds that hold a being to birth after birth. Bondage here arrives by consent: being overcome means he said yes a hundred small times, and each yes added a link until the chain looked like his own preference. Sense desire and ill will bind quietly, so a person can wear them for years while introducing himself as free.
Āsava: Taints Āsava are the taints that seep through a life, and the same word names fermented liquor. Bondservice to corruption works like rot: something sweet left covered in the warm dark turns on its own, with nobody deciding it should. A master of that kind gives no orders out loud, he only changes what tastes good, so a man takes his appetites for his opinions.
Vimutti: Release Vimutti is the mind's release once what bound it is gone. Liberty worth promising can be tested on the one promising it: see whether he can be insulted, refused a drink, or made to wait. Release comes with the ending of the taints, so it shows up as an absence, the tug that used to come when the door opened simply not coming.
Buddhism lens
What owns me that I would still describe as my own preference?
No one is free who is not master of himself; a man ruled by his appetites is owned by whatever he cannot refuse, and he carries that owner everywhere.
Whoever can move among pleasant and unpleasant things without being pulled or pushed has steadiness. Freedom is measured by how little tugs, not by how much is available.
To conquer others takes force; to master yourself takes real strength. The second is where power actually sits.
