Ego v. Being

The instant he stopped defending himself and spoke the plain truth, the weight lifted. For a long stretch the ego guards its image, explaining, justifying, arguing its innocence, and that very resistance is the suffering. Then he says it plainly. I have done this, without excuse and without collapse, and he steps out of the story the mind was guarding into the clear light of the present.

The release came at once. Honest admission is a form of surrender, and in surrender the past loosens its grip. His sin was put away not by punishment but by his willingness to face it, because what is brought into the open and accepted no longer has to be carried.

Live 2 Samuel 12:13 today

  1. Think of the thing you have been quietly explaining to yourself for weeks and say it plainly in your own head, with no excuse attached and no self-attack either. Just the plain sentence.
  2. Say a clean sorry to one person today, by text or in the kitchen. No because, no but, no explanation of the circumstances that made it understandable.
  3. When you are caught out in front of other people and the reflex is to defend, say the true thing instead: yes, that was me, here is what I will do. See how much lighter the rest of the day is.

What am I still carrying only because I will not say it out loud?

If someone shows you that you were wrong, change gladly. It is the pretending, not the error, that does the real damage.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 22

The one who does not defend themselves has nothing left to be attacked. There is an ease in dropping the case you were making.

Buddhism

Naming a fault plainly and without drama is what loosens it. What stays hidden keeps its weight, and what is brought into the open can be set down.
