Mettā: Loving-kindness Goodwill held toward everyone, enemies included. In the cave, with the hem of Saul's robe in his hand, David let the man hunting him walk out alive, and that withheld blade is what mercy looks like on the ground. Goodwill of that kind warms whoever holds it first, the way a lamp lights the hand carrying it before it lights the road.

Sīla: Virtuous conduct Conduct kept unbroken. "Perfect" here means whole rather than flawless: a jar without a crack holds whatever is poured into it, while a cracked one loses the lot. David could have taken the throne with one thrust of a spear and kept his hands off it, and a life held sound that way has somewhere for good to gather.

Cetanā: Intention The willing behind a deed, which counts as the deed. A merciful hand moved by a cold heart sends out coldness, and coldness is what comes back; the gesture is the cup, the intention is the drink. Mercy has to be meant before it can be met, and sparing Saul counted because David wanted the man alive.

Kammassakatā: Owning your actions Deeds belong to whoever does them and come back wearing that face. Mercy handed out is mercy stored up, and it returns the way a shout returns off a cliff wall, in the same voice that sent it. So the face changing in this meeting is David's own, and he is seeing back what he sent.

Brahmavihāra: The divine abidings Four rooms to live in: kindness, compassion, gladness at another's good fortune, and evenness of heart. Move into them and the divine is as close as the walls around you, met on the terms you already keep. Sung by a man finally out of reach of every enemy, this reads as a report of where he has been living all along.

Live 2 Samuel 22:26 today

  1. Before you send the message you have already drafted in your head, check what you actually want the other person to feel. If the words are kind but the wanting underneath is cold, wait until the wanting changes. Then send.
  2. Give someone one piece of mercy today where you hold the advantage. Let the slow driver merge, let the junior colleague's mistake stay between the two of you, let the reply you were owed go uncollected.
  3. When you catch yourself building the case against someone, the coworker, the in-law, the stranger in the comments, drop the case. You are the first person living inside that argument, and it is not a good room.

What are you handing out today that you would be content to receive back?

Tao Te Ching 49

The sage meets the good as good and meets the untrustworthy as good also, and goodness comes back out of the meeting. What you hold toward others is what the world hands you.

Confucius · Analects

Asked for one word to live by, Confucius gave reciprocity: do not do to another what you would not want done to you. Your conduct is the measure that gets used on you.

Talmud · Shabbat 31a

Hillel put the whole teaching in one line, that what is hateful to you, you must not do to anyone else. The rest is working it out, day by day.
