SUFISM

Sufism

A survivor sings this after long danger, and the first thing worth catching is what he does not say. He does not call himself the lamp. The subtle disease is taking credit for a borrowed glow, mistaking the light passing through for a light of one's own. The cure is this exact confession: to point at the source and say plainly, the shining is not mine.

A lamp only carries a flame it did not make. The dark stretches ahead are real and still coming, yet the One who is that flame has promised to keep burning through them.

Live 2 Samuel 22:29 today

  1. When something you made gets praised today, enjoy it, and then be honest with yourself about who and what you were handed along the way. The teacher, the chance, the help.
  2. Pass the credit on out loud in a meeting or an email, by name, for something somebody else actually did. Say it where other people can hear it.
  3. When a stretch ahead looks genuinely dark, a diagnosis, a bill, a hard month, stop trying to be your own light source. Ask for help from the one who is the flame, and from the people nearby.

Where have you been taking credit for a light that was only passing through you?

The same truth in other traditions

Katha Upanishad 2.2.15

The sun and the moon and the fire do not shine there. Everything that gives light is only borrowing it from the one light behind them.

Tao Te Ching 2

The Tao does its work and takes no name for it, which is exactly why the work holds. Credit claimed is credit that was never yours.
