2 Samuel 23:10 Meaning He Arose and Struck the Philistines Until

He arose and struck the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand froze to the sword; and Yahweh worked a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to take plunder.

What does 2 Samuel 23:10 mean?

A hand lets go of the sword at the exact moment the standard behind it turns negotiable. Weariness is a signal, and what it will mean is decided long before it arrives.

A hand lets go of the sword at the exact moment the standard behind it turns negotiable.

Weariness is a signal, and what it will mean is decided long before it arrives. To most of that army it meant the fighting was finished, which is why they were available afterward for plunder and not for the battle. To one man it carried no information about whether to continue, because continuing had been settled before his arm began to shake, and a settled question does not reopen under pain.

Yahweh worked the great victory through the man still on the field after the standard had thinned the ranks. Whoever keeps a quiet option to quit spends the hardest hour bargaining over whether to use it, and gives back ground already paid for.

Live 2 Samuel 23:10 today

  1. Pick one thing today and decide its end point before you start: the run is forty minutes, the writing is until the section is done, the phone stays in the drawer until five. Set the line now, while it is cheap.
  2. Tell someone your line out loud, a partner, a friend, whoever is around. Saying "I am not checking messages until after dinner" to a real person closes the back door you would otherwise use at seven.
  3. When the tired part arrives and your mind starts offering reasons, answer it once with the decision you already made, then keep your hands moving. You are not deciding again, you are finishing.

Which of your standards are you still quietly leaving open for renegotiation?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

Decide the kind of person you are going to be, then simply do what follows from it, because a thing settled in advance is not reargued in the hard hour. Debate begins only where the decision was left open.

Bhagavad Gita

Krishna tells Arjuna to act from his own settled duty and let go of the outcome, standing steady whether the day brings ease or exhaustion. Wavering mid-field costs more than the fight itself.

Zen

The old instruction is to sit through the hour you sat down for, whatever the legs are saying, because the one who renegotiates with every ache never finds out what is on the other side of the ache.
