2 Samuel 7:1 · World English Bible
When the king lived in his house, and Yahweh had given him rest from all his enemies all around,
The king sits at last in his own house, the wars behind him, quiet on every side. No enemy left to fight, no next conquest to grab.

EGO & BEING
The king sits at last in his own house, the wars behind him, quiet on every side. No enemy left to fight, no next conquest to grab. Such a pause is what the striving self both dreads and secretly aches for, when the doing stops and nothing remains to be won.
Then the deeper thing surfaces. While a person is at war, every scrap of attention is spent on the outer battle. When the fighting ends and one simply sits, present and unoccupied, the aliveness under all the activity rises into awareness. The rest was never a prize handed out for the victories. That quiet aliveness waited underneath the whole time, and the striving self simply had to stop long enough to feel it.

BUDDHISM
Vera: Enmity Enmity is the hostility held between two sides, each keeping the other's account open. The ring around the throne has gone quiet, and quiet bought by winning holds only as long as the winning does, since every beaten neighbor carries his grudge home whole. A fire banked for the night still has live coals under the ash.
Khema: Safety Khema is the condition of being out of reach of danger. Rest from enemies all around is the outward form of it: nothing coming over the wall tonight, no rider at the gate with bad news, the sword hung up in a house of cedar. Armies camp again in the spring, though, and a safety that turns on where they happen to be camped is borrowed against the next campaign season.
Passaddhi: Calming Passaddhi is the settling of body and mind once strain lets go. Years of campaigning end and the shoulders come down, sleep goes deeper, the house stops feeling like a tent that has to be struck at dawn. From that settling comes room to think past survival, and the first thing filling the room is the idea of building the ark a house of its own.
Santuṭṭhi: Contentment Santuṭṭhi is being satisfied with what has already arrived. Sitting in a finished house with the borders quiet is as much as a king asks for while on campaign, and it lasts about one evening before the eye moves to what is still unbuilt. The rest was the thing being fought for all along, and it can pass unnoticed while the next project is drawn up.
Anicca: Impermanence Anicca is the passing character of anything assembled from conditions. Rest came through causes, years of grinding down Philistine armies, and it will go the same way when other causes gather. Stillness on every side is a season rather than a holding, and the house he settles into now he will one day leave on foot, weeping, with his own son coming up behind him.
Appamāda: Heedfulness Appamāda is care that keeps its watch. Ease is where it slips, since a man who has scanned the horizon for chariots half his life has nothing to do with his eyes once the horizon stays empty. The roof of this same house is where he will be walking, idle at home in the season when kings go out to battle.
Ego v. Being lens
When the fighting stops and nothing needs doing, what do I find waiting underneath?
The way forward is not always adding more. Keep taking away until nothing is left to force, and what you wanted arrives on its own.
People wear themselves out chasing a rest they already own. The one who cannot sit still in their own house will find no quiet anywhere.
When the water stops being stirred, the mud settles and you can see straight to the bottom. The clarity was never added, only uncovered.
