2 Timothy 1:10 Meaning But Has Now Been Revealed

but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the Good News.

What does 2 Timothy 1:10 mean?

Death holds power over you only as long as you believe you are this passing form, this body and personal story that will one day end. The fear of death is simply the ego clinging to its own continuation.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Death holds power over you only as long as you believe you are this passing form, this body and personal story that will one day end. The fear of death is simply the ego clinging to its own continuation.

But when consciousness awakens in you, something is brought to light that was always true: what you essentially are was never born and so can never die. Life and immortality become visible, not as a distant reward but as your present reality. When you know yourself as this awareness rather than as the body, the fear of death loosens, because you see that only the form comes to an end, while the life you truly are goes on.

Live 2 Timothy 1:10 today

  1. Walking to the car or waiting for the kettle, ask quietly what in you is aware of this moment, and then stop asking and simply rest in the awareness that answers. Nothing dramatic needs to happen.
  2. The next time an older relative brings up dying, do not change the subject or get bright and cheerful. Ask what they are thinking about and listen without flinching, which is most of what they want.
  3. When a diagnosis, a scan result, or a late night of dark thoughts arrives, let the fear be there without feeding it with stories. Feel your breath going in and out, and let that be enough for one minute.

If I am not only this body and this story, what else is here?

The same truth in other traditions

Bhagavad Gita 2

The self is not born and does not die. Bodies are set down like worn clothing, while what wears them is untouched.

Zen

A teacher asked for the face you had before your parents were born. The question points past the body and the history to something in you with no beginning.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

What dies is only a moment of form giving way, the same change that has carried every living thing. To fear it is to fear the ordinary turning of nature.
