2 Timothy 1:6 Meaning For This Cause

For this cause, I remind you that you should stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

What does 2 Timothy 1:6 mean?

The gift is already there. A man does not build a talent for living from nothing; he was handed one, and it lies inside him now, banked like coals under gray ash.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

The gift is already there. A man does not build a talent for living from nothing; he was handed one, and it lies inside him now, banked like coals under gray ash. What dims it is forgetting it exists. When the self-image shrinks to the size of a person's failures, the fire seems to have gone out, though it only sleeps.

Stirring it up is the quiet work of remembering what was placed in you and picturing yourself using it again. The mental picture fans the coals, and warmth a person thought was lost begins to move through the whole machine. Nothing new arrives. What was given simply wakes.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Gifts do not leave a person; they go cold, and warming one back up is nobody else's job.

Passion cools on its own, which makes reheating it a maintenance task rather than a miracle: skipped action lowers the emotional temperature, low temperature makes the next courageous move feel foreign, and after enough of those a person concludes the gift of God in them belonged to who they used to be.

Stirring is physical before it is spiritual, a matter of posture, breath, what gets said inwardly, where the attention is aimed. Hands were laid on once, and once is all anyone else can contribute. Leave the fire banked and the gift stays intact while the person who used it quietly disappears, and the work that needed them never gets done.

Live 2 Timothy 1:6 today

  1. Think of something you were once good at and quietly dropped, and do ten minutes of it today. Not to get back to where you were, just to feel it still there.
  2. Tell someone about a thing they are good at that they seem to have forgotten about themselves. People often need one outside voice to find the coals again.
  3. In the middle of a hard stretch at work, stop and picture yourself handling it well, the way you have handled things before. That picture is the match, and you already have the fuel.

What in you has only been sleeping, and what would wake it?
