Yaqīn: certainty you can put your weight on Yaqīn names the settled knowing that no longer wobbles. Someone can agree with a promise and still keep one hand on the rail, in case it gives way. Certainty lets a person take that hand off, because the promise has stopped being an idea they hold and become the ground they stand on.

Die before you die: the self is let go of first The Sufis repeat this line as coming from the Prophet. The dying it points to happens while a person is still walking around, when the part of them that insists on its own way stops running things. Most people meet it in small pieces, giving up being right or being noticed, and finding they are still there afterward.

Fanā: the self passing away Junayd used this word for the self stepping out of the center. Nothing gets destroyed; what fades is the background hum of me, my name, my standing, my plans. People fear it as losing themselves, then find that most of what was afraid was noise, and that they are still here.

Baqā: what remains afterward Baqā names the life that continues once the self has stepped aside. The tradition places it right after fanā, because the emptying is only half the movement. A person goes back to ordinary work and meals, but the life feels received rather than owned, and that holds up under pressure.

I died as a mineral and became a plant: nothing was lost by dying Rumi wrote this about his own passage through one form into the next. Each stage looked like an ending from inside it, and each one opened into more life than the last. Someone facing a loss that looks final cannot see the next thing from where they are standing, so the trust comes before the seeing.

Live 2 Timothy 2:11 today

  1. Find one small place today to let the version of you that has to win just stand down: the last word in a thread, the correction you were about to make, the credit you were owed.
  2. In a conversation where you came in ready to be right, listen all the way to the end and give up the point on purpose. See whether you are still there afterward.
  3. When something you were counting on falls through, resist deciding what it means yet. You cannot see the next thing from where you are standing, so trust has to come before the seeing.

What part of you is most afraid to step out of the center, and what makes you so sure you need it?

Zen · Dogen

To study the way is to study the self, and to study the self is to forget it. What drops away is the insisting; what remains goes on living.

Tao Te Ching

The sage puts himself last and so finds himself first. Letting go of standing is not an ending but the start of real room to move.

Bhagavad Gita 2

The one who lives in you was never born and does not die. Forms pass through one another, and nothing real is lost in the passage.
