2 Timothy 2:9 · World English Bible
in which I suffer hardship to the point of chains as a criminal. But God’s word isn’t chained.
Your outer circumstances can be constrained in a thousand ways. The body can be confined, the reputation stained, the life narrowed until it feels like a prison.

EGO & BEING
Your outer circumstances can be constrained in a thousand ways. The body can be confined, the reputation stained, the life narrowed until it feels like a prison. All of this belongs to form, and form can indeed be bound.
Yet there is a dimension in you that no chain reaches. The presence aware of the confinement is not itself confined, for awareness has no shape for the world to grip. Your situation may hold your body, but it cannot touch the still, knowing space in which the whole situation appears. That space stays free whatever happens around it, and because it is what you most truly are, something in you can never be imprisoned.

BUDDHISM
Khanti: Patient endurance Khanti is the strength that bears hurt without souring. Hardship carried all the way to iron on the wrists is that strength at full stretch, where the only work left is to hold steady and go on writing to Timothy. Someone carrying a full bucket walks slowly and spills nothing; fighting the load is what makes the mess.
Lokadhamma: The worldly winds Praise and blame, honor and disgrace blow through every life and settle nothing permanently. Being filed among criminals is disgrace at its plainest, a label pinned on from outside a cell door that alters nothing about the one wearing it. Wind bends the grass and passes over, and whoever stops leaning with each gust can keep working through the noise.
Bandhana: Bondage Bandhana names what holds a being down. Iron and rope are the weaker sort of tie; the stronger one is carried inside, the pull toward comfort, safety, and a good name. A jailer can fasten the ankles and leave that inner knot completely untouched, so chains reach the body and stop there.
Vimutti: Release of mind Vimutti is freedom that needs no key. Wrists can be locked to a guard while the heart stays unfastened from craving, and no court has jurisdiction over that. Sunlight comes through a barred window as fully as through an open door, and the bars take nothing from the light itself.
Dhamma: The teaching Dhamma is the truth itself, owned by nobody who happens to speak it. The word that put Paul in prison had already gone on ahead of him, traveling in letters, in memory, in other mouths, while the messenger stayed where he was put. Fire passes from lamp to lamp, and where the first lamp sits makes no difference to the light spreading through the house.
Ego v. Being lens
Where in my life do I feel confined, and what part of me is still free?
He was lame and poor and said no one could chain his will. The body can be held, but the inner ground of a person is nobody's to seize.
Still water is what a person looks into to see clearly, and the mind at rest works the same way. What moves on the surface is not the same as what holds it.
Mind comes before all things; what we are is made by what we have thought. The world a person lives in is shaped first inside them.
