The ascent into the upper room is the lifting of attention out of the lower body into the high chamber of the head, the elevated place where consciousness gathers before it is charged. There the powers of a person assemble and abide, waiting. The 11 named ones are faculties of the awakened being, each a distinct energy: hearing, faith, love, strength, and the rest, drawn together in one raised place instead of scattered through the outer life.

The number 11 stands here for the circle left after the betrayer has fallen away, the working powers of a person gathered and not yet completed by the descending fire. The upper room is entered by going up within, by raising the whole company of inner powers to the top of the temple that is the body, where they wait as one until the higher energy comes down upon them.

Live Acts 1:13 today

  1. Before you start anything that matters today, sit for two minutes and call your attention back from wherever it is scattered, the inbox, the argument from yesterday, the thing you forgot to send. Let it all gather in one spot behind your eyes and wait there without a task.
  2. At dinner or on a walk with someone, put the phone in another room, not face down on the table. Bring all of yourself into the one room you are actually in, and let the conversation have your whole company.
  3. When the pressure spikes and you feel yourself splitting four ways, stop and name what is pulling at you. Then hold all of it together in one place in your mind, unsolved, and breathe once before you move.

Where are the pieces of you scattered right now, and what would it take to call them in?
