Say, I am only a human being like you: the messenger is not the source The Quran puts these words in the Prophet's mouth. Being treated as more than human is pleasant for about a second, and then it starts to bend a person out of shape. Saying plainly that you are one more human keeps that from happening, and it hands people's attention back to God.

Ḥubb al-jāh: Love of standing high in people's eyes Al-Ghazali counts this among the last things to leave a person. Admiration is sweet, and anyone respected for closeness to God gets fed it constantly, usually by sincere people who mean well. The moment praise is taken in rather than passed on, a person begins working for the audience, and the work slowly goes hollow.

Faqr: Having nothing of your own The Quran tells people they are the poor ones and God is the rich one. Anyone praised for something good knows, in an honest moment, that they did not produce the thing being praised. Holding that clearly makes honor easy to hand straight back, since it was never theirs to keep.

Setting the Everlasting apart from everything made: Junayd on holding God as one Junayd packed the whole matter into that one line. Warmth toward a person who helped you can slide, almost by accident, into treating them as the source of the help. Keeping the difference clear does not cool the affection; it puts the gratitude where it belongs.

ʿUbūdiyya: Being a servant Sufis hold that the highest name given to the Prophet was simply servant of God. Admitting you are a servant costs nothing, and it lifts the weight of other people's expectations off your back. Standing there, a person can help someone without having to be anything more than a fellow human doing their job.

  3. When you are being praised in a meeting or a thread and the credit is not all yours, say the other names out loud right then, before the moment passes.

Where am I letting people make me taller than I am, and what is that costing me?
