Acts 11:16 Meaning I Remembered the Word of the Lord

I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John indeed baptized in water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit.’

What does Acts 11:16 mean?

Water can only cleanse the outside. It touches the surface, the behavior, the outer form of a life, and leaves the inner person untouched.

Ego v. Being

Water can only cleanse the outside. It touches the surface, the behavior, the outer form of a life, and leaves the inner person untouched. But the deeper immersion he recalled reaches all the way down into what you are beneath your thoughts.

To be baptized in that spirit is to be flooded with presence itself, until your whole being is soaked in awareness rather than lost in the mind. This is not an improvement of the old self but an awakening of the aliveness that was always underneath it. He remembered this because he had just watched it happen in people, and he saw that no ritual of water had produced it. Only the inner opening had.

  1. Look at one habit you keep because it looks right from outside, the tidy inbox, the morning routine, the posted photo. Ask honestly whether anything inside you is different because of it.
  2. With one person today, drop the polished version of yourself and say something plainly true, even if it is small. Outer manners are fine. They are just not the whole of you.
  3. When you catch yourself performing calm in a tense moment, stop performing and actually come back to your breath. One is a surface. The other reaches all the way down.

Where have you settled for cleaning the outside when something inside was asking to change?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 38

Outer correctness without inner truth is only a shell. The form can be perfect while nothing real has changed.

Zen

Polishing the outside of a lamp will not light it. The change has to happen where the flame is.
