Acts 11:5 · World English Bible

Acts 11:5 Meaning I Was in the City of Joppa

I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision: a certain container descending, like it was a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners. It came as far as me.

What does Acts 11:5 mean?

In a trance the busy daytime mind steps aside, and images begin to rise on their own. A wide sheet, held at its four corners, comes down from above.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

In a trance the busy daytime mind steps aside, and images begin to rise on their own. A wide sheet, held at its four corners, comes down from above. The number four is one of the oldest signs the mind uses for something complete, whole on every side, like the four directions of the earth.

What comes down is not invented by the man praying. It descends into him from the deeper layer of the mind, offering something his narrow daylight self had shut out. The vision widens him, showing that what he had judged unclean belongs, after all, inside the whole.

  1. Before you reach for your phone tomorrow morning, lie still for two minutes and let whatever you were dreaming come back on its own. Write down one image, even if it makes no sense yet.
  2. Tell one person something strange that came to you unbidden, a dream, a memory that surfaced in traffic, an image you cannot place. Let it be odd without explaining it away.
  3. In the middle of a day that is pushing you hard, close the laptop for five minutes and stop deciding anything. Let your mind drift and see what rises when you are not steering.

What has been coming to you lately that you keep setting aside because it does not fit?

Taoism · Zhuangzi

Zhuangzi dreamed he was a butterfly, and woke unsure which one was dreaming the other. The sleeping mind can show you something your waking mind cannot argue with.

Hinduism · Mandukya Upanishad

Waking is only one of the states we live in. Dreaming and deep sleep hold their own knowledge, and the self that is whole stands behind all of them at once.

Judaism · Talmud, Berakhot

A dream left uninterpreted is like a letter left unopened. The message was sent whether or not you choose to read it.
