When Peter had come to himself, he said, “Now I truly know that the Lord has sent out his angel and delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from everything the Jewish people were expecting.”

What does Acts 12:11 mean?

So often we move through our days half asleep, carried along by a stream of worry we mistake for our own life. The chains and the guards are still there, yet something wakes.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

So often we move through our days half asleep, carried along by a stream of worry we mistake for our own life. The chains and the guards are still there, yet something wakes. Peter came to himself. That phrase holds the whole thing. Waking is not an escape into a better story but the return of the one who was always present beneath the fear, the awareness that had been covered over.

Once that stillness comes back, the mind quiets and seeing grows clear. Only then could he say he knew for certain he was free. A person who steps out of the noise of the anxious mind sees where they plainly stand, and finds themselves already delivered.

Live Acts 12:11 today

  1. Sometime today, when worry has been running in the background for a while, stop and look at what is actually in front of you. The room, your hands, the light. See the difference between the trouble you are imagining and what is here right now.
  2. When a friend is spiraling in a text thread, do not add fuel or fixes. Ask one grounding question, like what is actually happening right now, and let them come back to themselves.
  3. In a tense moment at work, before you fire off the reply, take one slow breath and feel your feet on the floor. Answer from that quieter place instead of from the alarm.

How much of what is gripping me right now is actually happening, and how much is only being rehearsed in my head?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen

The old teachers said enlightenment is nothing exotic: eat when hungry, sleep when tired. Waking up is not arriving somewhere new, it is coming back to the plain fact of where you already are.

Buddhism · the Dhammapada

The mind, untrained, wanders and manufactures suffering. The one who grows watchful of it steps out of a prison that was mostly built of thought.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Much of what torments us is not the event but our judgment about it. Drop the judgment and the chain you were straining against turns out to be your own grip.
