ORTHODOX
Suffering is not a sign that God has forgotten you. The road into His kingdom runs through hardship, and the Church has always taught that trials are how the soul is tested and made strong. Faith is not proven when life is easy but when everything pushes back and you keep going.
These words were meant to steady frightened believers, not scare them. In plain words: hard times are part of the journey home to God, so when they come, hold on and keep believing instead of assuming you took a wrong turn.

EGO & BEING
The kingdom of God is not a distant place you reach after death. It is the state of deep peace and aliveness available the instant you become fully present. And strange as it sounds, it is often suffering that carries you there.
When tribulation grows so heavy that the mind can no longer run or pretend, something in you gives way. The ego, that false self built out of thought, loses its grip. In genuine surrender to what you cannot change, an inner space opens, and through it you enter the very peace your pain seemed to deny.

BUDDHISM
Kalyāṇamitta: Good Friend A good friend walks the road beside you and keeps you on it. Paul goes back into the city whose stones nearly killed him, so the strengthening arrives in person, on foot, at the door. Souls are steadied here the way a young tree is steadied by a stake driven in beside it: the tree does the growing, the stake keeps it from going over in the wind.
Saddhā: Confidence Confidence is the trust that gets your feet moving before you can see where the road ends. Continuing in it is the labor, since a faith that arrived in a rush of preaching and healing now has to hold in towns where the crowd turned. Trust in a bridge works the same way: you find out whether it holds by walking across it.
Viriya: Persistence Persistence is the effort that keeps going after the first enthusiasm burns off. Continue is the whole instruction, because these disciples are young in the teaching and the men who gave it to them are leaving town. A fire has to be fed for hours after the moment it was lit, or the pot never comes to a boil.
Khanti: Patient Endurance Patient endurance is the strength to bear hard treatment without hardening in return. Afflictions come as an ordinary feature of the road, so they are taken the way a walker takes rain: hold the pace, do not turn back at the first squall. The man saying this was dragged out of Lystra and left for dead, and he has already stood up and walked back in through the gate.
Dukkha: Suffering Suffering is the first of the truths, and its work is to be fully known. Through many afflictions marks the terrain being crossed rather than a toll collected at the door, and no way around it arrives at the same gate. Weight has to hang on a rope before anyone trusts it, and what gets learned inside affliction is what holds when the next one lands.
Sotāpatti: Stream Entry Stream entry is the first irreversible step onto the path. To enter a kingdom is to cross a threshold once and be inside it, with the current past that threshold carrying a person forward whether the going is easy or not. The gate stands ahead on the same road their feet are already on, which is why they are told to keep walking rather than wait for better weather.
Orthodox lens
Where have I assumed that difficulty means I am off the path?
The path does not begin by promising that life stops hurting. It begins by saying plainly that it hurts, and that facing this is the first honest step rather than a sign you have failed.
No one knows what he is made of until he is tested. The storm is not proof that the sailor took the wrong course, it is the only place seamanship is ever learned.
Water is the softest thing and it wears down stone. What endures does so by yielding and continuing, not by overpowering what stands in the way.
