Healing waits on a gate inside the man, and what stands at it is whatever he already counts as possible.

Decades of consistent experience harden into a feeling of certainty, and certainty runs the body directly: a man sure of the answer never shifts his weight forward to find out. Every day since birth had handed him another reference, and references that solid do not get examined, they get lived from, and the fence ends up looking like the horizon.

Paul's look does diagnostic work, reading whether the preaching had landed as news about other people or as something addressed to him. That shift in meaning sets the state, the state decides whether the man is ready to move, and readiness is the one condition checked before power is spoken. A belief that was only ever accepted keeps the attempt from happening, so nothing on offer has anywhere to land.

  1. Pick one thing you have filed under not for me, the language, the running, the apology, the job, and take the first step for fifteen minutes today. Treat the filing itself as the thing being tested.
  2. When a friend talks about something they want, listen as if it might be for them rather than reassuring them it is hard. Your belief about them travels further than your advice.
  3. Next time you hear good news or a real offer, ask whether you just filed it under what happens to other people. Then ask what you would do if it were addressed to you.

What have I stopped trying for so long that I no longer remember deciding to stop?
