Whether a closed door reads as defeat or as steering decides how much of the world a person's work reaches. Two shut doors read as rejection build a state that cannot take instruction, and a discouraged man sleeps straight through his own redirection.

SELF-HELP
Whether a closed door reads as defeat or as steering decides how much of the world a person's work reaches.
Two shut doors read as rejection build a state that cannot take instruction, and a discouraged man sleeps straight through his own redirection. Read as steering, those same closures keep him alert, and alertness is the condition for receiving a heading given rather than chosen. A call arriving as another people's need carries a man further than one assembled out of his own ambition.
The correction was a few degrees of heading, held without argument, and the compounding did the rest: same men, same message, set down on ground that would carry it for centuries. A man who defends his original plan keeps the feeling of being right and spends his years in a field he was never sent to.

Where have I been protecting a plan so carefully that I stopped hearing where I was actually needed?
Water does not argue with the rock in its path. It takes the opening it is given, and that yielding is exactly why it reaches the sea.
You do not choose which doors close, only what you do when they do. The one who treats the closure as an instruction keeps his footing, and the one who treats it as an insult loses both the door and himself.
The student who already knows where he is going hears nothing the teacher says. An empty cup is not a weakness, it is the only thing a new direction can be poured into.
