Acts 17:16 · World English Bible
Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw the city full of idols.
An idol is any form the mind mistakes for the sacred: a figure, a possession, an image of who you think you are. Whole cities lose themselves this way, reaching for the eternal by clutching at things that arise and pass away.
From the Ego v. Being reading below.
The same verse, read by one tradition.

EGO & BEING
An idol is any form the mind mistakes for the sacred: a figure, a possession, an image of who you think you are. Whole cities lose themselves this way, reaching for the eternal by clutching at things that arise and pass away.
One who sees this feels not judgment but recognition of a shared forgetting. The formless source of all life cannot be housed in any object, because every object comes and goes while the presence within you does not. Turn from the image to the aliveness aware of it, and the search idolatry could never satisfy comes to an end.
Ego v. Being lens
What have I been quietly expecting a thing to give me that no thing can give?
When a finger points at the moon, do not stare at the finger. Every form that points to the sacred can be mistaken for the sacred itself.
The true self is not this, not that. Whatever image you can hold in the mind is not the thing you are reaching for.
The way that can be named is not the eternal way. The moment you fix it into a form, you are holding the container and not what it held.
