Acts 17:25 · World English Bible

Acts 17:25 Meaning He Isn’t Served by Men’s Hands

He isn’t served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath, and all things.

What does Acts 17:25 mean?

You cannot serve the source of life as though it lacked something you could provide, some offering made by human hands. It has no need, for it is the very thing giving you life and breath in this instant.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

You cannot serve the source of life as though it lacked something you could provide, some offering made by human hands. It has no need, for it is the very thing giving you life and breath in this instant. Feel that for a moment. The aliveness in your hands, the breath moving in and out without your effort, is not something you produce. It is being given to you, continuously, by the source itself.

So the truest response is not to hand it anything but to grow still and receive, to notice the life already flowing through you right now. Worship becomes simply paying attention to the gift as it arrives.

SUFISM

Sufism

There is a proud kindness that imagines God is short of something a person can supply, as if the Giver of breath waited on the small gifts of hands. That quiet self-importance is the fault, the flattering thought that the fountain needs the cup. The cure is to receive before trying to repay, to take one's next breath as a thing handed over, not earned.

Every living thing is a place where the same generosity keeps showing itself. Life and breath and all else pour from one source, and the honest response is gratitude, the answer of someone being kept alive this very moment.

Live Acts 17:25 today

  1. Once today, stop and feel three breaths come in and out without steering them. They were arriving all morning without your help.
  2. Thank someone for something small they do regularly and never get thanked for. Be specific, and do not attach a request to it.
  3. When the day turns demanding and you feel like you are holding everything up, pause and name three things keeping you going that you had nothing to do with. Then go back to work a little lighter.

What have I been straining to earn that was already being given to me?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Chuang Tzu

The deepest breathing goes all the way to the heels, and it is not something you do. You are being breathed.

Hinduism · the Bhagavad Gita

Do the work and let go of the fruit. The giving was never yours to arrange, only to take part in.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You did not earn your life, your body, or the morning. These were handed to you, and the fitting response is gratitude rather than payment.
